Freshman guard Ty’Reek Coleman is quickly becoming a standout for Illinois State men’s basketball. The Aurora native has brought energy and confidence to the Redbirds, earning Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week honors in his first week with the team.

Coleman credits his teammates and coaches for helping him adjust to the college game. He said they encourage him to play his style and learn step by step, which has boosted his confidence on the floor.

He said his biggest growth has come from learning to slow the game down and stay under control in the paint against stronger, more athletic defenders.

Coleman’s passion for basketball began in childhood while watching his cousins play. His early production has already backed up that love for the game, with 24 points against Cornell, 16 against Southern California and a team high 19 against Long Beach State.

Coleman’s strong start suggests he may become a major contributor for the Redbirds this season.
