Dr. Juenook Bae from Illinois State University’s department of health services mentions how the issue first came to light.
“Lots of residents realized they had a little bit of smell, and that was later found to be byproducts from microorganisms,” Bae said. “The city temporarily switched water sources from Lake Bloomington to Evergreen Lake and then switched back.”
The cits uses water from both lakes but the quick switch combined with algae, made the taste problem more noticeable.
Bae says that although the taste may be unpleasant, the water is not harmful.
“Safe means does not really cause health issues one example is MIB like bi-products that makes a specific problem that smelly potentially earth smell but it isn’t found to be dangerous for our health.”
The “funky” taste will not go away overnight but is in a work in progress.
