With the winter Olympic games kicking off Friday evening in Milan, Italy, Illinois State University decided to bring the games to Normal.

I-S-U’s Event Management, Dining, and Hospitality held a winter games event Monday evening, both in celebration of the Olympics, and with the goal to bring students together.

“We really want students to find a community and feel a sense of belonging here,” Samantha Schultz said. “We think that these events offer a way to do that, whether they’re coming with friends they already have, or connecting with new people. It gives them a place to find people.”

Students had the chance to participate in various winter sports that are seen during the Olympic games.

Sports included hockey, curling, and simulated ice skating, as well as other non-sport related activities.

“We went over to check out the basketball stand, and got the Stanleys,” Abby Kesterson said. “We did the picture frames and all that, it’s been really great.”

This event was very successful in its goal, with hundreds of student lining up beforehand.
