McDonald’s locations in Bloomington are joining a trend of not using the penny.
Pennies have been cut from production as of 2026. Many organizations have decided to stop using the coin in their stores.
McDonald’s is one of these organizations and now has forced its workers to adjust to the resulting shortage when handling currency. McDonald’s employees now have to round up or down while giving change to customers depending on how many pennies they have available.
McDonald’s workers say that card payments are becoming more common now but customers who do pay in cash may be inconvenienced.
United States government says that the penny will still not be in production until further notice for convenience, due to the cost of production of the coin costing fractions of a cent more than the value of the coin.
