The Midwest Food Bank in Normal provides food for hundreds of food banks across Illinois. Rather then distributing straight to families, the Midwest Food Bank instead provides for food pantries, who then distribute to the families. The food bank has over 400 pantries that they provide food for. They are a Christian non-for-profit, and they receive their product through donation and individual contribution. They then donate to other organizations such as the Salvation Army. Currently, with the federal Snap program under threat, they are facing a higher than average demand for more food. They have seen a 10 to 30 percent increase in demand. Food Bank Director Mike Swartz said “Over the past couple of weeks there was a threat for SNAP to be shut down. We’ve already received additional calls from the 410 agencies we serve across Illinois. Saying their communities are asking for more food.. and we’re doing the best we can to meet that need”.  The warehouse had over 240 agencies collect food the most recent distribution day. The Midwest Food Bank continues to rely on donations and volunteers the face the growing needs they’re facing.
