NORMAL, Ill. — Although the government shutdown has officially ended, its lingering effects are still being felt across the Bloomington-Normal community. One local restaurant is stepping in to help families who were left without access to essential food benefits.

On November 8, Hacienda Leon announced on Facebook that it would offer free meals to families impacted by the suspension of SNAP benefits during the shutdown. The restaurant’s leadership says the decision came from a place of gratitude and responsibility to the community that has supported them for years.

“We have a lot of support from the community,” owner Martin Leon said. “During these seven years we have been in business in Bloomington-Normal and the one location in Lincoln too. We know the economy is tough right now, so we felt it was something we needed to do to give back and help as much as possible.”

The response has been overwhelmingly positive. Many families have reached out with appreciation for the restaurant’s generosity as they navigate the uncertainty that followed the shutdown.

“Everybody has been really thankful,” Leon said. “The feedback we have from customers has been phenomenal.”

On Wednesday evening, President Donald Trump signed a bill to reopen the federal government until the end of January. With the government back in operation, SNAP benefits are expected to resume in the near future.

Even once the need for free meals decreases, Hacienda Leon says their commitment to service will not end. Leon emphasized that the restaurant plans to continue supporting nonprofit organizations and individuals who may need extra help.

“We will continue helping with other needs, nonprofit organizations, and people who need us,” Leon said. “We are here for them.”
