BLOOMINGTON, Ill. — Senior citizens were given a more personal look inside Miller Park Zoo on Wednesday as part of the zoo’s ongoing efforts to stay connected with the community.
The morning tour began at 8:30 a.m. and lasted about half an hour, giving seniors early access to exhibits before the zoo opened to the public. Tour host Jeff Bakken started by introducing the group to the zoo’s red hawk and continued guiding them through additional exhibits.
“The senior tour starts at 8:30 and typically lasts between thirty and forty minutes,” Bakken said. “Then the seniors get access to the zoo before it opens.”
The senior tours have been a tradition for roughly 14 years, offering attendees an up-close experience with animals and zoo staff.
Miller Park Zoo leaders say programs like this are part of a larger mission to involve residents of all ages.
“We offer opportunities for the community to come in and learn about our animals and learn about animal conservation,” said Silvia Schuh. “That is very important and true to our hearts.”
In addition to the senior tours, the zoo provides volunteer opportunities and sensory-sensitive tours for individuals who may be sensitive to noise, scents, or visual stimuli.
Visitors can also support the zoo through its online wish list, which includes items like bird feeders and small animal cages.
