The Miller Park Zoo is welcoming their newest member, Max the red wolf.
The new wolf spends his time with Magnolia at the wolf exhibit.
The zoo keepers keep tracking devices to monitor the wolves progresses and wellbeing.
Zoo keeper Erik Heinonem shares what the wolves are fed, “We feed the wolves about once a day, meat or a whole prey. Rabbits, or chicks, or rats or something like that, and then they’re always given the option to eat some dog food.”
Some of the animals are used to possibly mate and breed too.
Zoo Education Manager Julia Benzel talks about how they care for the animals when breeding, “We bring animals in as companion animals for breeding pairs, and we’re also called a holding facility for specific animals.
“Some of those being our red pandas; we have two of them that are our breeding pair China and Georgie. We have our Wallaroos that are a breeding pair Huck and Bindi. We have several wallabies, we have a group of flamingos, and through the species survival plan we are genetically matching to get valuable off-spring.”
The Miller Park Zoo has free admissions on Fridays until the end of the month and are open every day of the week, where visitors can now see Max at the wolf exhibit.
