An emergency meeting was called following the severe storms Friday evening.
On Monday evening, the Normal Town Council unanimously approved an extension of a local emergency disaster proclamation.
The approved resolution allows the mayor to extend the proclamation for up to seven day increments.
Council members say story recovery is expected to take longer than the original two day period, allowing relief efforts to continue.
“The purpose of a disaster declaration is again, we’re going to world with McLean County and the city of Bloomington, gather data, continue our response and cleanup efforts, track all. those costs, and also try to get reports from residents and property owners who experienced damage. Then, we will use all that information on a county-wide basis to submit to the state for possible FEMA and other kinds of state emergency aid.” Council member Pam Reece said.
While the extent of the storm damage is still being assessed, not fatalities or injuries have been reported thus far.
Public safety crews are continuing to work extended hours, in order to clear debris.
“One of the things we’re tracking is brush collection, and our tree removal efforts for everything that people are putting up on the curb. In just two days, being all day Saturday and all day Sunday, we’ve collected around 3900 cubic yards of brush. To put that in context, for the entire month of March, we collected about 3200 cubic yards. We’ve collected over an entire month’s worth of brush in two days.”
The Town of Normal encourages residents impacted by Friday’s storm to submit a damage assessment report.
