The Trio program is common amongst thousands of universities across the country, including Illinois State University.

Fall is here at Illinois State, and brown, yellow, and orange leaves are beginning to scatter on the quad. But just as the leaves are diverse in color, students deserve a campus that reflects them just the same.

Trio at ISU emphasizes the importance of diversity surrounding the campus’s culture. They do this by building a community through recognizing the features that make us humans unique and stronger together. College is a common adjustment period, but it can be difficult for those who are first generation students, in financial need, or have disabilities.

Trio is located in Fell Hall and open to all students, especially those who may find it harder to feel secure and represented. Ms. Latoya quoted, “closed mouths, do not be fed”. She had to open her mouth to talk and speak for herself, also having to branch an outreach for resources. Latoya also got to experience more open-minded people, mannerisms, self-integrity, and self-respect.

The program also has advisors who offer academic support, and hosts many events for career development. Also working to promote self-growth and focusing on what makes you, you. Succeeding on an individual level, while building a tight-knit community through fun events such as bull games, promoting teamwork, mentor ship, and guidance through group activities, help setting a foundation for college success and beyond.

Trio at ISU has helped people get out of their shell, meet different people, and help navigate uncomfortable situations. When students have a safe space together, it creates a better environment for the whole campus.

While many members have been in Trio since middle school, students can still join whenever they see fit. More information can be found on the University College’s website.
