Nina Harden, senior and advisor of the event says she thinks it was important for herself to bring a similar experience to her own community.
She explains that many kids don’t have the opportunity, chance or funds to travel to Chicago just for a job fair. She also explains how she thinks its a wrong doing within the district, but it’s a great opportunity to bring something worth experiencing to Central Illinois.
The event brought together more than 25 college tables with universities from across the country. Students from University High School, Normal Community West, Urbana High School and other schools attended.
Dr. Carla Campbell-Jackson, one of the event directors, said the students hard work was important in making this event happen.
She says that the students were impetus behind this event and explains how Bloomington Normal supported the vision.
Organizers hope the first HBCU Night will lead to more opportunities for students to learn about HBCUs and connect with colleges closer to home.
