Everyday, around 1500 people use the Connect Transit system to get around Bloomington-Normal.
Even though getting around town might be simple, waiting for a bus might not be.
Buses often transfer on busy roads, many of which leave riders waiting for a transfer with no shelter. In other areas, accessibility is also an issue.
In order to combat this, Connect Transit have secured funding for a new transit center in Downtown Bloomington.
The goal of this new station is to streamline the Connect Transit system, as well as making riding the bus safer.
“The current design has about a five thousand square foot building that has a lot of class so people will be able to wait inside,” Jeff Jurgens said.
“They’ll be able to see when their bus comes, and they’ll be able to see it going around to the different locations. There’s also a covering if people are waiting outside, so if it’s raining they’re not going to get wet, helping secure them from the elements.”
The new transit center will replace the Market Street parking garage, which closed in August due to structural concerns.
Since its closing, Bloomington-Normal drivers have had to rely on street parking, and free lots around the area.
“When they closed the garage, they opened up these lots, and they’ve never been filled when we come down.” Dana Kerraker said.
The new transit center will also include a two-story garage to accommodate parking needs.
The city of Bloomington is also working on a new streetscapes program to improve the downtown infrastructure.
This project will also accommodate 180 new apartments to open in the downtown area.
Construction is projected to start in early 2027.
